I’ve never been a collector of things.
Okay, that’s not entirely true. I’ve amassed quite the collection of dust. And dust bunnies.
I’m also very skilled at collecting dirty dishes in the sink. And shoes in the foyer.
And at varying times throughout the week, the dining room sports multiple collections of mason jars. And drop cloth fabric. And Etsy shop invoices. And crafting supplies. And shipping supplies. And sewing supplies.
It’s a smorgasbord of collections.
But all of those collections are accidental. Born from my sketchy housekeeping skills and random acts of disorganization.
However, with all that said, I want to try my hand at intentional collecting. And, since this all new to me, I thought I should start small. With these mini cutting boards.
Cute, right?
They’re the perfect size to fit right next to your place setting. Ready for some bread and butter.
Or, in my case to display these darling, personalized dishes that belonged to my mother-in-law.
And if anyone knows the purpose of those little dishes, please tell me in the comments!
I didn’t even show you the best part ….
I had them custom engraved!
Mince. Slice. Chop. Dice.
And here is where I give you the link to the Etsy shop where I purchased them. Unfortunately, she’s no longer selling them — or anything at all — at her shop.
Bummer. That doesn’t bode well for building my cutting board collection.
😉
But the talented artisan who created my cutting board/bread boards does have a blog. And I’m in love, love, love with her home and her style {click here}.
I think I may be ready to add some grown up, big boy cutting boards to my burgeoning collection. If anyone has any links or suggestions where I can find some fabulous, vintage look boards please leave them for me in the comments section.
Thanks! 🙂

These are adorable. I think those are either bread and butter plates or appetizer plates (probably). I want to have a cutting board collection with those big boards, but I don’t have room for them in my kitchen. Are you looking for cutting boards that are food safe – as in to use – or cutting boards for decoration? A lot of the wholesalers have the really pretty big decorative cutting boards, so you should be able to find them. If you are looking for unique, hand-crafted, try http://scoutmob.com/t/home/kitchen?ref=nav

My husband’s sister thinks they may actually be individual ashtrays! From their wedding and then reserved for the fancy parties. Crazy, right? They even remember their parents putting out silver cups of cigarettes for parties too! Thanks for the link. I’m going to check them out now … 🙂 Linda

Love your blog! I am posting a collage of recent cutting/serving boards that I make. All sealed with edible tung oils. It will be at top of my page at facebook.com/texascraftmaven

Thank you for that collage!!! I love and covet them all! 🙂 Linda

Very cute! My problem is I have too many collections…and lots of them don’t even belong to me! (Can anyone say 12,496 pieces of wood?)

The small bowls were finger bowls to clense your fingers after a meal. Very formal stuff. Nowadays one might use them as holding wedges of lemon for a shrimp meal or cute cut out pats of butter
.. great post!

I can’t agree with everyone here. I have those small plates in my Dinner set and they are personal butter dishes, from back in the days when everyone got their own 2 curls of butter. We also used them in the restaurant I worked out, for weddings, when foil wrapped butter serves were considered not classy enough. They can be used to serve lemon or lime wedges or other optional garnishes. . My finger bowls for cleansing were a lot taller on the sides of the dish, so you didn’t splash water everywhere. Notice I said ‘were’. I got rid of them in a de-cluttering spree.
Also thought I would mention, about those little cutting boards. A dear old and late friend of mine was Dutch and she had quite a few of them. She would make open sandwiches on them and then serve the sandwich on the board instead of on a plate. She told me that when she was a child they didn’t have bread and butter side plates, everyone had their own little board.
I seem to have accidently started a collection of rolling pins. I’m still looking for the best way and place to display them, so they can still be used.

These cutting boards are beautiful! My significant other’s father made me a cutting board for our kitchen and I love working on it because it’s massive and takes up half a counter! So I think I’m due for a few mini ones for small things here and there to use. 😉 Especially for table decoration! So cute! I hope you can hunt down more in different sizes elsewhere! Thanks for sharing this post. 🙂

I have an accidental cutting board collection too. Think I’m up to five. Time to take them out from under the desk and give them a worthy home. While I have no idea what the cute little dishes are really for, butter for my bread works fine with me.

Just saw these and had to comment. 🙂 So cute and you could totally DIY your own now that her shop is closed.
PS Love your flag jars, too!

My name is Ann and I too am a cutting board-aholic. I don’t know why, I can’t pretend to understand it…but there is something addictive about them. We need a diagnosis for it, clearly. 🙂

Perhaps a support group. You know, the road to recovery starts with an admission … 😉

I have 8 of the mini cutting boards from the same etsy shop! I love them. I was disappointed as well to see they are no longer selling them. I was actually wondering what happened, because her blog hasn’t had any new posts since last fall.

Love those cute little bread boards… too bad the Etsy shop isn’t selling them anymore. 🙁
They look beautiful on your table 🙂

I’m in the “I think that they are butter plates” camp. As for cutting boards, I am joining a support group…I have a bunch that I’ve collected over the years. I need “one or two more” and then I’m finished. I look at estate sales and online for vintage ones. Welcome back from vacation! xx

We should open a club…. and make it a thing.
