Welcome to my gallery of mason jar projects! I have personally created each and every project featured in this collection. Seriously. Some might even say that I’m a bit obsessed with mason jars. So much so, in fact, that I’ve created a second blog devoted exclusively to mason jar projects {click here} …
For the projects below, click on the thumbnail photos and you’ll be taken to the tutorials.

I was wondering how this would work with purple. Is it possible to still have it be a dark purple or just tinted?

I have a question. I was wondering if there’s a certain way to paint it on there without noticeable streaks or sometimes i get clumping. I know to wait until its fully dry before applying a second coat or doing what else I need to do, but I’m just starting out and to be honest with you i haven’t painted or done anything with art since high school. Just need some helpful tips if you don’t mind. Thanks! Your work is giving me ideas to try. I do hope they turn our as good as yours. You did an amazing job!

Honestly, it will always look imperfect. But please make sure you are using just plain acrylic paint. Not multi-purpose or enamel. Also, if you hold them up to the light you will see streaks and imperfections. That’s part of the beauty of the distressed looks. It helps to fix those errors. Plus, once you add some water and flowers everything works out and the streaks and imperfections are no longer noticeable. However, if this is a problem for you then I suggest using one of the “chalk paint” products that are now available just about everywhere now. They are matte and self-leveling and offer a fuller coverage. There’s even a craft line of Americana paint chalk paints that you can find at Michaels in the little tubes.

This would also be great for parties and wedding decorations. Just imagine the possibilities. Mason jars bowls for treats at the wedding using the wedding colors. WOW

Is there a good way to ship painted mason jars? Does the paint chip off during shipping at all….especially in the summer months? Do you only use a certain brand of paint that adheres well? What do you seal them with? Thank you!!
Linda says
I pack and ship jars daily for my Etsy shop. Over the years, I’ve learned how to send them so they don’t arrive broken! I use USPS Priority Mail (2-3 day) flat rate boxes because they jars are heavy and it can get expensive if you try to ship otherwise. I wrap each jar in four layers of bubble wrap, tucking int he extra inside each jar as I roll and then taping it all into place on the bottom and tops of the jars. Then I add peanuts to the box to fill any blank space.
As for chipping off, if you give the jars ample dry time (at least 24 hours) and then seal with a clear matte finish spray sealant – which dries pretty quickly but I give it a few hours before packing — all will be fine. For the spray sealant I use check out this blog post: http://www.itallstartedwithpaint.com/paint-distress-mason-jars/
Now, the one exception to these rules are the spray painted jars. I would give them three or four days before packing up because the bubble wrap can ruin the finish on the jars. And if you’re using a metallic finish spray paint DO NOT SEAL THEM. The sealant discolors the metallic look.
Finally, as for paints I use craft acrylic paint, chalk paints (my favorites) and spray paint (just for metallic gold & silver). For the craft acrylic paint only use matte finish. Do not use enamel or multi-surface or gloss finish craft paint – they are not opaque.
Hope that helps!
🙂 Linda

Thanks for the amazing info!
I do have a few questions:
•Do you have a preferred spray paint brand for your metallics?
•Do they discolor/oxidize when curing in the oven?
•Have you ever tried metallic copper spray paint? I’m wondering if it would work or just turn ugly “old penny brown” when baked.
Linda says
Sorry for the delayed response! Okay, my preferred spray paint brand for metallics is Valspar. I can only find it at Lowes. Don’t cure spray painted jars in the oven. The fumes would be dangerous and it’s sounds like a serious fire hazard! And the colors will absolutely discolor. Don’t even use a clear coat on metallic spray paint because it will dull and change the color of the paint. I’ve never used the metallic copper spray paint. But, gain, I don’t recommend putting it in the oven!

I love all your ideas! I have made some distressed jars along with a friend. She ended up not liking hers and gave them to me. The colors don’t go with any of my decor, is there a way to remove the paint and repaint with a different color? Thanks!
Linda says
If the paint has not been sealed and is craft (acrylic) paint, try soaking them in a sink and/or tub with hot water and dish soap. The paint should then just peel off.
