Well, hello there lilacs.
It’s so nice of you to bloom just in time for the summer home tour event organized by Marty of A Stroll Thru Life.
And it’s so nice of you to bloom just in time to greet the visitors who have found their way here from the oh so fabulous VEL at Life & Home at 2012 blog (and can I just say I covet VEL’s kitchen!).
The very minute I saw your beautiful blooms, I ran out with sheers and mason jars filled with water. I snipped and trimmed and very un-artfully arranged you. And then I spread you around the house. Starting in the dining room …
And then I grabbed a few stems, stuck them in a wreath and hung it from a ribbon from my window mirror.
Lilacs, you and your magnificent scent also adorn the living room …
Can’t you just smell them?
Funny story, lilacs.
And yes, I realize saying the story is funny in advance could be the kiss of death for this story …
The day I snipped and trimmed and un-artfully arranged you in mason jars and generously spread you around the house, my husband commented on your delicious smell after arriving home from work. And then he proceeded to walk right past you …
right past the antique-look toolbox filled with your blooms on the dining room table …
right past the wreath on the mirror with your blooms tucked here and there …
right past not one, not two, but three mason jars generously filled with your blooms in the living room …
… and made his way to the front door. Where he turned to me and said, The lilac bush is really strong this year. I can smell it right through the cracks in the door.
To which I replied, Um, yeah honey. Or perhaps it could be all the mason jars filled with lilacs like, um, everywhere inside the house!
🙂

Beautiful, and so simple to do and oh the fragrance! I think you were referring to “shears” for cutting those beauties!

Lilacs always bring a big smile to my face! When my son was three, we had three large lilac bushes right outside our kitchen window. I had heard that smashing the end of the stems with a hammer made the blooms last longer. I returned from putting a vase of lilacs in the living room to find my son walking away with the hammer. “What are you doing with the hammer?” I asked him. He very excitedly responded, “There’s a fly on the window. I’m gonna kill it!” Yikes! Seems like I returned just in time!

I have always been in love with the color combo of blue and lilac and I can never seem to pull it off, but you my dear, did so flawlessly! Love it all! So honored to share the Summer home tour with you! Cheers!

Hahaha it’s funny how husbands hardly ever noticed something! I can put an elephant in the middle of my family room and he doesn’t see it. 😀
The lilacs give your beautiful home a romantic feel this summer.

Hi Linda, Lilacs are my favorite. I love the scent and the delicate vintage beauty of the flowers. I have light, lilac, dark purple, and white lilac bushes. Mine bloom in April, so I’ve been missing them. Thanks so much for sharing yours today. Your home is just lovely.

I loved your home tour! Your home is beautiful!

Linda, I can gather only a bunch or so anymore, after leafy trees grew tall near them and blocked the sunshine they needed to produce blooms! Also, it didn’t help that after our first year in this house I thought I’d be proactive about care and maintenance of the lilacs and proceeded to prune–whatever season it was, it was the wrong season to be pruning, if it’s ever even correct to deadhead lilacs! Now, to have lilacs in the house I ask permission of friends and neighbors and homeowners I don’t even know to cut some of their blooms! Geographical note: Chicago seems to be two weeks or more behind New Hampshire in the arrival of spring. But spring flowers make it worth suffering through winter! ~ I really admire how you’ve painted furniture and objets in your home, it looks great!!
Linda says
I did the same thing to my lilac bush! Gave it a big old haircut in the Spring and then it didn’t bloom for like 2 or 3 years. This is the first time in awhile that I got blooms! So happy about that!
Bliss says
Ah ha ha ha ha….. The funny story totally could have happened here. The beautiful clean house for a tour though, um, that could not right now!
Christine says
LMAO I see your hubby and mine could be related! Loving your home tour, and the lilacs clippings! I really want to plant a lilac in my backyard but due to the root system they have after a few years, it would have to be at the back end of our yard. WHich after seeing your beautiful blooms just may happen!
Have a great week!
