My husband came in the door the other night after walking the dog in a state of complete and utter disbelief.
“Can you believe one of our neighbors has their house fully decked out for Halloween?” he asked with a note of shock in his voice.
I looked up and, without skipping a beat, replied: “She’s probably a blogger.”
I watched as the light bulb moment took hold. It didn’t hurt that he was standing mere inches away from my Halloween fantel …
a project that had been up for a week …
and a project I worked on a full two weeks earlier. When the temperatures were pushing 90 and the spray paint simply refused to dry …
Then, as I thought about my neighbors full-on Halloween display before we even reached October 1st, I realized I’m contributing to the machine. With this blog.
Forcing holidays sooner and sooner each year …
cranking out October crafts in early September …
even {gasp} thinking of Christmas in early October.
What’s a home décor and craft blogger to do? I can’t stop the wheels once they’re in motion …
all I can do is make sure those wheels don’t bankrupt us!
Which is why I’ve been looking around at what we already have on hand for projects and inspiration, before introducing anything new into the house.
And that’s exactly how I landed on this wood block pumpkin idea …
They were essentially free. I had all the materials on hand.
Lurking in the garage …
I started with a 2 x 4 I found. I’m pretty sure it’s been leaning against the wall of the garage since before we purchased the house.
I cut some blocks using my miter box. And, yes, it did take a while …
and, yes, some muscle was needed and there may have been sweat involved.
I sanded the blocks down before spray painting with orange paint I had from my candy corn mason jars …
Then added polka dots …
using a pencil eraser …
The stems came from leftover 1 x 2’s from the living room board and batten project; spray painted in gold …
and affixed with the glue gun.
The wood block pumpkins were finished off with bows.
Bows that led my husband to question whether they were presents …
*sigh*
but what does he know about holiday decorating?
