This is not the post that was intended for today.
Today’s post was supposed to be upbeat and happy and filled with poly fiber filled pretty pillows made from drop cloths. Handmade by me. Embellished with monograms and numbers and rosettes and ruffles and poms.
Pillows that I’ve been slaving over for the past week …
Today’s post was suppose to announce the “Grand Opening” of my Etsy shop.
But, alas, as I tweeted yesterday instead of taking pictures of my pretty, pretty pillows ….
You know. For the insurance adjuster.
See that car in there …
… under that giant tree branch?
That’s our mid-life crisis.
Uh huh.
We drive a ragtop in Chicago. Well, technically, my husband drives a ragtop in Chicago. And we purchased that particular convertible just two car payments ago.
And now it’s a ragtop that has been crushed and shredded with it’s windows smashed to smithereens …
While this blogger shouldn’t be surprised by the high winds in the Windy City (though that nickname has more to do with long-winded politicians than weather) …
… she also shouldn’t be all that surprised that this happened to her husbands’ car …
And now I digress for a bit of a backstory: You see, my husband and cars don’t mix. The man has had more flat tires in his 50 years than the entire block of car-driving neighbors added together will experience in their entire collective lifetimes.
To add insult to injury, one of his cars had to be towed away by Kars for Kids. And the subsequent car’s transmission died just hours after I wrote the check for the final car payment …
… the title was still ‘in the mail’ when we went car shopping.
So we researched options. Settled on the Toyota Solara and had CarMax pull some available options from nearby lots for us to test drive.
And when we arrived on the CarMax lot and sat in that very first gray Solara with it’s black ragtop and heated seats …
… and I knew for certain right then and there that this was going to be the car that wouldn’t be riddled with expensive issues.
This was going to be the car that outlived it’s car payments by much, much longer than mere hours or weeks.
This was going to be the car that wouldn’t be in and out of the shop every other week; fully funding our mechanic’s children’s orthodontics and college funds.
This was going to be the car that saw 200,000 miles … and then some.
This was going to be the car that broke my husband’s decades-long car curse.
This was finally going to be the car to go the distance …

Oh no! I am so sorry about your poor car, but happy your home didn’t suffer any damage and that you and your family are safe! Living in the south we see our share of fallen trees as well.
Robin @ Happily Home, After says
The fact that he wasn’t in the car when this happened seems like good luck to me … depending how you look at it maybe this is the car the changed his bad luck streak 🙂 So glad everyone is OK.
Jana@Transformations From the Heart says
Oh my goodness, sad about the car but glad no one was hurt. We had some pretty high winds this past weekend also. I always worry about the trees falling. They were sure doing some swaying Saturday and Sunday.

So glad that he or you were not in it at the time, cars can be replaced, but never people… hope that happy times come back fast, and your shop is successful,..looking forward to the next blog.. hugs from across the pond.j

Jennifer L. Griffin says
So glad your house and family were ok! I know it doesn’t seem like it now, but surely this is one of those things that you’ll laugh about in the future… 🙂
Anne says
Oh so sorry! Wow, and the Solara is such a fabulously fun car to drive, too. Maybe you can just take it back to the dealership and tell them they gave you the wrong car… I’m sure that would work!
Hang in there, Linda! I really want to see those pillows.

Laura from Top This Top That says
WTH!! was that wind? Cute car- well it was! Best of luck with the new vehicle or will it be a bicycle from now on?
micki @ ADD housewife says
oh my! that’s a lot more damage than I thought from your tweet! I was thinking branch. not BRANCH. DH took my car to work one day. They were cleaning the windows. And the ENTIRE window fell out of the second story bathroom and landed on my car. :/
Artsy VaVa says
Oh NO! Sorry about your husband’s car. Maybe he should start using public transportation. Sounds like his relationship with cars is jinxed!
Lynn @ UpCountry Olio says
Oh, that is so sad! His run of bad luck with cars is pretty amazing. You’d better get back to your pillows. You need a little fluff in you life to day. Hope tomorrow is better!!
DTTD imagine.design.create says
That is totally and completely CRAPPY 🙁 We had wicked winds here yesterday, but luckily nothing this bad happened in our neighbourhood. Surprising, actually, because our neighbour’s old maple tree drops branches all over our yard in a soft breeze.
I hope you’re insurance company will fully cover either repairs or replacement. Poor car 🙁
Fingers crossed that this is the end of your car curse!

Oh my word! What an awful thing to have happened! I am so sorry. Maybe this is the end of the curse? Or maybe he should take up bike riding!

Oh my! So sorry about the car but so happy no one was inside when the limb came crashing!

Oh, HECK to the no! I’ve had my Highlander for ten years, and Toyotas DO last forever. Unless Mother Nature decides otherwise.
Jessica @ Stay at Home-ista says
Oh no! That is very, very bad. Like not good. Not the worst, but very far from begin the best thing that could happen.
Hopefully you have another car so your kids can get to school…

Angie @ Postcards from the Ridge says
Oh snap! That really stinks. At least nobody was hurt. Maybe your husband should look into riding a bike. They’re much less expensive to replace!! 😉
Bliss says
Wondering what Mike did to piss off the God of cars? Cause when the clouds part and the angels sing they don’t usually sing that old song about trees falling from the sky.

Meegan says
Oh my goodness! Bless your heart. So thankful angels were watching out for you.

Oh no Linda! I’ve never been to Chicago but I hear public transportation might be the way to go…but then again perhaps your “Sponsor’s” luck would harm the general public…
Amy@BuffaloRoam says
🙁 Bummer.
I assume this happened in that crazy weekend storm? They said we had 127 tornados touch down in Kansas on Saturday night. Terrifying! Glad you are ok.
Kathy {Pearls in Paradise} says
I am so sorry Linda. I feel your pain (minus the tree branch) as we are currently the owners of one pain in the neck minivan (currently in the shop for the 3rd day and counting!). Hope the insurance company is kind to you!
Karah @ thespacebetweenblog says
Oh my goodness … there are no words. I feel fortunate for you all that it was only the car that was harmed. The mid life crisis had a mid life crisis. 🙁
