I thought I was an organizational genius when I came up with this idea for my entry …
It was my serious look at me I’m-all-that-and-a-bag-of-fancy-chips genius moment …
And you read that right. I didn’t think I was just any old bag of chips genius. I was a fancy bag of chips. As in super fancy. As in never a Buy-One-Get-One-Free bag of chips. As in never, ever a 10-for-$10 bag of chips …
And my super organizational genius fancy-bag-of-chips system worked. Just as planned. Just as it so simply stated on those bins …
It worked according to my genius fancy-bag-of-chips plan …
That’s right. My fancy-bag-of-chips self didn’t hold up my end of the organizational genius bargain …
Turns out the fancy-bag-of-chips genius system breaks down when the “shred” bin never gets shredded …
And clearly the ‘keep’ needs to be kept elsewhere.
As in … filed.
So much for my weekend plans sunning my pasty white fancy-bag-of-chips genius self along the shores of Lake Michigan …
Looks like the shredder and the filing cabinet and my not-quite-so-genius-10-for-$10-bag-of-chips self have a long overdue date …

Maybe a large shredder (with a cute, handsewn, perhaps appliqued cover of course) standing next to the radiator? Of course, a much more picture worthy and ADORABLE (I’m a serious blogger trying desperately for a magazine shoot) would be a goat tied to the radiator (with a cute, handsewn, perhaps appliqued jacket. I’m just sayin…..

LMBO!!!You are so funny!!!! Great way to start the day. Also great to see i’m not alone!! 😀 I MADE my organizational system for mail 2 months ago. As I am craft-challenged, I was VERY impressed with myself. It’s hanging on the wall…exploding with good intentions!!! Hahaha!

Oh, I know what this is all about. I have a green basket to toss all my junk and papers in. Everything Thursday I clean it out and sort through it all, but it never really gets fully empty. Oh well, at least your baskets are cute and not green plastic like mine!
Janel@hatingmartha says
well…yep. Nothing to say. You are in a pickle.

I’m cracking up. I find that if you keep the “keep” pile long enough when you finally go through it most of it can be thrown away. My former boss did that all the time. Have fun with your shredder…do try to get out to the lake shore but keep cool. This scorching heat is bad. Happy Weekend!

Lol! I still think it is a great idea!

Our shredder gets used so seldom that the novelty hasn’t worn off and I can still rope the youngest into using it. Shall I send him on a mercy mission to Chicago?

What a crack up…Your self analysis…and each hilarious comment!!! My husband needs to see this as I have referred to his study as a “death trap” so piled high with shred piles! Every time I venture into his study I nearly break my neck!
I love your blog, Linda…and am so happy to have found you!

I hate paper clutter. It’s one of those things I’m constantly fighting!

I’ve found myself to be the “weak link” in every paper organizational system / scheme I’ve come up with. Then I tried a conventional wisdom method to break my paper-mess habit; putting a little pen mark on every piece of paper each time you touch / move it, until it goes into a filing place … lots of tick marks on the paper is suppose to show you how much time of your life you’ve invested in a piece of paper, as well as demonstrate that you need a system that works! Well, it took a while, but that tick technique taught me a great lesson … I now open all mail once a day while standing next to a shredder and a trash can … what’s left in my hand is filed. And I get to use the counter space for something I really like instead of my piles 🙂

You are too funny! Thanks for giving me a chuckle. I don’t shred papers…but then I live a farm and I get to burn them. Much easier to go from the mailbox directly to the burning barrel and toss them in. But I do have a seriously needs to be filed thing happening. Have a great weekend with your files and shredder!

hahaha, so funny! i tried a similar organizer, but i just ended up slowly moving piles to the basement. We are now at the point where EVERY TIME ethan goes into the back of the basement, he looks at me and says, “we really need to do something about this.” hahaha
Jessica @ HomewithBaxter says
ohh i can relate! I saw an idea somewhere to use stackable trays to sort your mail “do now, do later, file”. Well, I tried to implement that system but I’m afraid my trays look a lot like your bins. I say take care of the “bills” then head to the beach! Summer’s too short!

Mmm my thinks you need to rethink your strategy… as in a little bit of delegation. You see I had the same issue until I discovered a wonderful system. Once a week (or more when necessary) part of the boys’ “chores” is to shred the stuff in the shred basket. It worked great for years… until they got to be teenagers and it was no longer “fun” to shred. Now the youngest has taken over the duty. He is currently trying to renegotiate the terms… as in trying to convince us to set aside iTunes funds… or rather funds in general. Good try, kiddo, good try! ha ha! 🙂
So if you come up with a better strategy… do you want to let me know. ‘Cause I think my “method” is just not working so great any longer! 🙂

Having a big bonfire is so much more fun than shredding! When I moved from St Louis I was determined not to take any junk with us…it took me 6 hrs to burn 15 years of paperwork. My shredder could not cope and would overheat and shut down. I made the effort to go paperless where possible…all bills, statements now arrive in my inbox and my shred pile is tiny.

I <3 U!!! I'm not the only one who can't seem to get herself or anyoone else to do the simplest thing of turning on and running a piece through the shredder! No, we wait till the leaning pile falls and blocks the room. Someday......

o how I can relate…and I found a way to solve..I have a review, keep and shred…I took a small shredder and put in a galvinized crate..wire feeds through….I learned in Time Managment in a career of retail..handle paper no more then twice.Either it should be a torn into all the fun little bits…or action…it is a tough habit to develop. I will say some times you just can’t but. Bills I write the check right away and mail off unless I am dropping off. Then into my purse..keep it goes into the file…and shred…done right away…now these little ones do not hold a lot…but I empty twice a week on trash day….It was my habit developed with having so much to do…and this includes email…just blabbing

I’m nodding my head emphatically in agreement and sympathy. I created a filing systen for all our important paperwork, which broke down when I added the “to file” folder in front for those times when I might not have time to find the right folder but I needed the papers put away. Guess where allllll of our paperwork ended up going?
karen@somewhatquirky says
Man do I ever GET this predicament! I remember thinking you were really brave to put those at your front door! I always get a laugh when all these retailers advertise “get organized” products and they are like three little cubbies and a drawer (or something similar). I need CRATES to get organized not little bitty pencil holders.
Jean @ www.thebackyardbungalow.com says

Well, I’m more of a Flaming Hot Cheetos Gal anyway, so go sun your buns! p.s take the ‘keep’ pile with you and as your roasting your mallows at the end of the day, throw that pile in the fire, you’ll be glad ya did!
