The chalkboard door. That’s what started it all. There would be no it all started with paint blog if this project was a fail.
It’s as simple as that.
I spent close to a year stalking other blogs. Like this one. And this one. And this one. They inspired me. They instructed me. I would have never, ever tackled my staircase or installed board and batten without their amazingly helpful tutorials. Complete with the very tools they used and products they purchased. And like a good student, I purchased those very same tools and those very same products …
And as I completed each project, it dawned on me that I might have some ideas to share. Original projects to create. Some tutorials to tute …
But I needed a test project. You know, to see if my original ideas were blog worthy. And thus the chalkboard door idea formed in my head. I wanted to keep it cheap. And practical. Easy to find products and tools. So I grabbed some black foam core from Office Depot. And chalkboard paint, cheap moulding, and adhesive from Home Depot and got to work. Taking pictures along the way. Because that’s what the bloggers I followed did. And when I was done … and it really did work out as planned AND actually looked good … I made the decision.
And thus it all started with paint was born.
I made that chalkboard door a year-and-a-half ago, and it’s held up great. Though, I thought it was time for a refresh …
Out came the chalkboard paint, a staple in this diy-lover’s home …
After two quick coats, here she is today. Looking like new again …
Ready for some new “to do” lists.
In hindsight, maybe I should’ve named the blog “it all started with chalkboard paint” …
Or, more precisely, “it all started with a chalkboard door” …

That looks amazing. Did you take out the bevels of the old door or did you attach the poster board on top of them? Love how it came out! And with the refresher too 🙂

I am so glad you shared this again. You’ve given me an idea…(I have a house full of those doors myself.)
And I appreciate how do-able you made the project. I’d like to tackle one by my loneself. I think maybe I can with this one.

OK girl, You totally have my attention. I want a chalk board door in my kitchen too. And I have panels, just like yours. You are brilliant to just cover them up and use trim to hide the edges. Impressive that the coreboard has held up so well too. Hmmmm. I wonder if I could do the same thing with stainless steel on the bottom panel? Will have to fiddle with that one….

Hi, Linda! It’s been awhile but I am still here plugging away on my own blog. What a great post to read.. how it all started for you! I don’t have a chalk board door but when I used to go to auctions, I always zeroed in on old chalkboards. Just love them! And now look what we use for a chalkboard! So many great ideas out there and thanks for sharing yours!

Enjoyed this post sharing how you got your start! I love this door and love chalk paint. Sometimes I have to really FORCE myself not to use it on everything I own — LOL!

Cool to hear how your blog started! That was before I’d started reading (obvs) but not long before. You kinda burst onto the scene with no awkward growing pains. I love that door!

Why is the before picture a totally different door in a completely different room?
Linda says
I know, right? Because I forgot to take a before pic of the door in the kitchen but it’s the exact same door as the ones we have on our bedrooms upstairs. I wanted to make sure I shared they style of the door that I was working with!

LOL! Because I completely forgot to take a before picture of the door in the kitchen! But it looked just like all the other doors in my home so I took a shot of the bathroom door instead. I wanted to show what I was working with at the start of the project!
Thanks for calling me out on it! 😉
