Homemade Granola Salty and Sweet – Easy Granola Recipe – Salty and Sweet Granola Toppings
Jump to RecipeI’ve reached the point where I’m making homemade dog food.
In a blender.
Just a full on, mashed up puree of meats and rice and carrots. With a sprinkle of cheese.
I didn’t even make my kid’s own baby food. Yet here I am pureeing up some chicken in the blender for a dog.
Granted, he’s a cherished member of our family.
And he’s also almost 17. And mostly blind. And deaf. And pretty much toothless.
Awwww. Poor little Ernie!
But as I’m blending up some meats and rice and veggies, I can’t help to think: Is this my future?
Will there come a day when I have to blend up a mix of proteins and plants to drink them through a straw? Or eat them with a spoon?
I suppose it’s better than drinking those Boost drinks (yuck).
Though I definitely do give my blender a workout these days what with smoothies and homemade hummus and smoothie bowls.
It’s also a reminder to enjoy crunchy foods as long as I can …
and as long as I still have teeth! 🙂
Like this homemade salty and sweet granola recipe that I 100% enjoy crunching down on — especially on top of oatmeal and my blended smoothie bowls.
Homemade Salty & Sweet Granola
Ingredients
- 1 cup oats
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
- ⅓ cup roasted, salted pepitas
- ¼ cup sunflower seeds
- ⅓ cup dried cranberries (or raisins)
- 1 tbsp maple syrup (for oats)
- 1 tsp maple syrup (for walnuts)
- salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°
- In a medium bowl, mix 1 cup of oats with 1 tbsp maple syrup; sprinkle with salt. Spread out in an even layer on a sheet pan covered with parchment paper. Place in oven and bake for 5 minutes.
- Chop 1 cup of walnuts to desired size (I prefer smaller pieces as I use this granola as a topping on oatmeal and smoothie bowls). In same bowl used for oats, mix walnuts with 1 tsp of syrup. Sprinkle with salt. Add to pan with oats in single layer (mix in with oats). Place in oven and bake for 7 minutes.
- Chop (optional) 1/3 cup roasted, salted pepitas (again, I prefer smaller pieces but you can use whole pepitas for this step). Add pepitas and 1/4 sunflower seeds to pan, mixing in with oats and walnuts. Place in oven and bake for 7 minutes.
- While oats and nuts cool, chop dried cranberries (again, optional; you can use them whole). Mix into the mixture once cooled. Store in mason jars. Makes enough to fill 2 pint size (16 oz) mason jars.
