Irish Flag Painted Terra Cotta Planters – St. Patrick’s Day Craft Idea – Easy Irish Flag Craft Idea.
I hate to say this because I really do love the Irish. And I 100% feel proud of the Irish blood running through my veins. And I really do hope to visit the beauty that is Ireland someday in the near-not-distant future …
fingers crossed that today’s blog post doesn’t get me banned from the country.
But there is something I really, really don’t particularly love about the Irish.
It’s the colors.
There. I said it.
Kelly green and orange. Not a fan. Not colors I would willfully or enthusiastically introduce into my home’s decor.
And yet, here we are. Staring down March 17th. And gearing up for a St. Patrick’s Day celebration awash in kelly green (mostly) and orange (thankfully not as much).
I know, I know. It’s one day of the year. I really should get over it. It’s not like I have to paint my walls kelly green in celebration.
So I swallowed my disdain and dug deep for my Irish pride to create a little St. Patrick’s Day craft.
Irish flag terra cotta planters. In all their kelly green and orange glory!
How To Make Irish Flag Terra Cotta Planters
Materials Used*
White Paint (I used Rustoleum Chalked Paint in Linen White)
Deco Art Americana Acrylic Paint in Kelly Green
Folk Art Acrylic Paint in Pure Orange
Painter’s Tape
Sandpaper (I used 80 grit)
Paint Brushes
Succulents (optional) – I found mine at Home Depot
*includes some Amazon affiliate links.
Instructions
Start by taping off the tops of your pots. You can skip this step if you aren’t a messy painter like me. 🙂
Then I gave the top rim a quick brush of white chalk paint. You can use whatever white paint you may have on hand. I like the chalk paint because 1) it’s a very matte finish and; 2) it dries really quickly.
Once dry, I distressed it a little bit, focusing on the top and bottom edges.
I used a swiffer to get rid of the chalk dust.
Using a flat tipped brush, add a green vertical stripe.
Followed by a vertical orange stripe, leaving an equal(ish) stripe of white in between.
Continue alternating the stripes around the top edge of the pot.
Once dry, I gave it a second quick distress with some sandpaper.
I finished with a quick spray of matte sealant.
All that’s left to do is remove the painter’s tape …
and add some succulents (found mine at Home Depot).
And as for those pesky kelly green and orange hues, I’m okay with them in small doses. As in 3″ mini succulent planter doses. 😉

Love this, thanks for sharing on craft schooling sunday! I was always wondering what you did with all the mason jars, and silly me, only now just saw that you have an Etsy shop, so it all makes sense now!
