Thanksgiving Table Setting in Rust, Brown, Neutrals – Free Printable Thanksgiving Place Card
As someone who has surpassed the “getting” part of getting up there in age — I’m solidly there there — I’ve bore witness to more than my fair share of holiday gatherings.
And something I’ve noticed is how they tend to expand … and contract. And expand again. And contract again.
Rinse. Repeat.
We’re currently in the contract phase.
When I was much younger (and definitely not up there in age!) it seemed as if Thanksgiving and Christmas were huge family affairs. Aunts and uncles and grandparents and cousins. The house was full. There was even a kiddie table.
But then …
Aunts and uncles move away. Grandparents retire (either to Florida or, you know, to the big retire in the sky). And suddenly those big family gatherings contract. It’s just mom and dad and my siblings.
And then my sister gets engaged. And my brother. And suddenly the holidays … expand. With new in-laws and then, eventually, nieces and nephews.
And then the cycle cycles through again.
Right now we’re in the contract cycle. So this Thanksgiving it’s mom (me) and dad (Mike) and our two young adult children.
And that’s okay. Because (1) it makes it a low key, low pressure affair and (2) it means in a few years we might find ourselves in expand mode again! 🙂
Wishing you all a lovely Thanksgiving with your expanding — or contracting — families!
